CIAP Architects has spent decades embedding itself into the fabric of Singapore’s medical infrastructure. Beyond the US$100 million proton therapy facility at the NCCS, the firm has delivered major developments including the Outram Community Hospital, Mount Alvernia Hospital, and the National Skin Centre. Currently, the team is focused on the Tan Tock Seng Medical Tower, a project Chan views as essential for maintaining high healthcare standards as the nation’s population ages.
The tension between technology and craft
Chan argues that the architectural profession is at a crossroads. While he welcomes AI-driven software capable of automating regulatory compliance, he remains wary of the technology’s impact on younger designers. He contends that an over-reliance on AI-generated aesthetics risks producing “building stylists” rather than architects who understand the fundamental mechanics of construction. For Chan, the priority remains efficiency and smart planning, a philosophy refined over 50 years of practice.
