Wellness Workdays Launches Mental Health Certification for Construction

Construction workers face some of the highest suicide and substance abuse rates of any profession, prompting Boston-based Wellness Workdays to launch the BRAVE Certified Workplace program. This initiative integrates mental health support directly into existing industrial safety protocols to help identify at-risk employees weeks earlier than traditional methods.

The BRAVE framework—an acronym for Be aware, Reach out, Actively listen, Validate and inform, and Encourage next steps—acts as a practical roadmap for peer-to-peer intervention. To earn certification, organizations must train at least 20% of their workforce as BRAVE Frontline Certified and designate one ambassador for every 100 employees. This structure shifts mental health from a peripheral awareness topic to a core component of daily site safety.

Early data suggests the approach works. Following pilot implementations, 99% of participants reported increased comfort in approaching struggling coworkers. Furthermore, supervisors identified at-risk employees three to four weeks earlier than they had prior to the program's adoption. Debra Wein, CEO and Founder of Wellness Workdays, emphasized that the program was developed alongside behavioral health clinicians and construction leaders to ensure the curriculum reflects the specific realities of high-risk job sites. Several major general contractors have already integrated the framework, aiming to improve retention and safety performance by embedding these support systems into their established operational culture.
