ABILITY Neurotech Launches First Human Trials for BCI Platform

A surgical team at the Technical University of Munich has recorded the first human neural data using ABILITY Neurotech’s brain-computer interface. Conducted at the Klinikum Rechts der Isar, the study validates the system's ability to capture high-resolution signals, marking a pivotal transition for the Geneva-based firm from development to clinical implementation.

ABILITY Neurotech Launches First Human Trials for BCI Platform

The procedure involved capturing neural activity from patients undergoing brain tumor surgery, with the team securing 20 to 30 minutes of intraoperative data per participant. Led by Drs. Wagner, Meyer, and Jacob, the study serves as an initial validation of the platform’s signal acquisition capabilities. While early sessions occurred under general anesthesia, upcoming phases will monitor neural decoding while patients actively engage in speech and motor tasks.

Unlike standard Bluetooth-reliant systems, ABILITY’s technology is engineered to stream large volumes of lossless, raw neural data. Professor Simon Jacob noted that the research allows the team to benchmark these signals against established clinical electrophysiology, specifically targeting phenomena like high-gamma activity and evoked potentials. This data collection provides the scientific foundation necessary to move BCI technology from experimental research toward reliable, long-term clinical applications for patients suffering from paralysis, ALS, or stroke.
