While 71% of Americans own pets, a significant portion of the hospitality market remains unprepared for the logistical requirements of these guests. Research indicates that 43% of pet owners prefer to travel with their animals, a figure that climbs to 47% among Gen Z. Consequently, 64% of respondents admit that their pets dictate their overall travel decisions. The friction between owner expectations and available options is causing a tangible loss in bookings, with 45% of all pet owners—and 57% of Gen Z travelers—reporting that they have limited or canceled trips due to inadequate pet policies.
Pet Owners Are Canceling Trips Over Lack of Pet-Friendly Lodging
Nearly half of American pet owners have altered or scrapped travel plans because they could not secure suitable accommodations for their animals. As summer travel hits its peak, data from PetScreening suggests that the industry is failing to meet a growing demand, particularly among younger travelers who prioritize pet inclusion.

John Bradford, founder and CEO of PetScreening, notes that the market suffers from a failure to provide clear and predictable pet-friendly options. When travelers are forced to leave pets behind, they face additional financial burdens, with many paying $25 to $50 per day for boarding or pet-sitting services. For Gen Z, these costs are even steeper, as 59% report spending more than $25 daily for care. Property operators who fail to standardize their pet policies risk alienating this demographic, while those who simplify the booking process for pet owners stand to capture a significant share of the summer travel revenue.
