The share of sustainable bookings in Interhome's summer mix climbed from 16.7% to 29.5% over the five-year period. Italy currently leads this transition with 40.1% of its bookings classified as sustainable, followed closely by Germany at 36.1% and Switzerland at 35.9%. While France and Spain show lower adoption rates at 16.1% and 29.3% respectively, they represent distinct stages of market evolution.
Sustainable Holiday Home Bookings Surge Across European Markets
Demand for eco-conscious vacation rentals has more than doubled in five years, as Interhome reports that sustainable properties now account for nearly 30% of its summer bookings. This shift reflects a structural change in traveler preferences across Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain between 2020 and 2025.
Property owners are increasingly integrating green features to drive occupancy and reduce overhead. Recycling initiatives saw the most significant cumulative growth across all regions, while EV charging stations became a hallmark of the French and Swiss markets. Solar installations, meanwhile, have become particularly prominent in Italy and Spain. According to CEO Jörg Herrmann, the company launched this recurring analysis series to guide the industry toward more informed management practices. Saskia Weber, Director of Sustainability at Interhome, noted that owners are effectively leveraging energy-efficient appliances, water-saving fixtures, and photovoltaic systems to attract guests while lowering long-term operating costs.
