The effort specifically targets four critical drugs: ketamine, midazolam, norepinephrine, and succinylcholine.
Virginia Secures $16 Million Grant to Domesticate Drug Production
A $15.97 million federal investment from the U.S. Economic Development Administration will fuel a new project aimed at securing the domestic pharmaceutical supply chain. Led by the Alliance for Building Better Medicine, the initiative establishes an end-to-end pathway for manufacturing essential sterile injectable medications entirely within the United States.
This project arrives as part of a broader push to reverse decades of offshoring that left the U.S. dependent on complex global networks. Since 2020, the region has attracted nearly $14 billion in public and private commitments, including a surge of investment in 2025 from pharmaceutical giants like AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, and Merck. Governor Abigail Spanberger noted that the initiative is designed to cement Virginia’s position as a national leader in advanced manufacturing while fortifying the country's medical resilience.
