Steel Dynamics Hits Record Shipments as Aluminum Expansion Progresses

The company’s consolidated operating income surged to $700 million, marking a 30 percent increase over the first quarter. This growth was fueled by a rise in average external selling prices for steel, which reached $1,298 per ton, outpacing the cost of ferrous scrap. CEO Mark D. Millett attributed the strength to healthy domestic fundamentals, including increased manufacturing reshoring and steady infrastructure funding, which helped offset a $16 million impairment charge related to relocating a planned aluminum slab center from Arizona to Columbus, Mississippi.

While the steel platform remains the primary engine of profitability, the aluminum division is showing signs of maturation. Operating losses for the aluminum segment narrowed to $33 million, a 48 percent improvement sequentially. With the third cold mill now in commissioning, the company expects to ramp up production of high-quality flat-rolled sheet for the automotive and beverage sectors. Looking toward the second half of 2026, management anticipates that increased utilization and lower startup expenses will solidify the aluminum operations as a core contributor to the company’s long-term growth strategy.
