The settlement follows the Archdiocese’s August 2023 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, which was triggered by a surge of lawsuits after the California Child Victims Act opened a three-year window for previously time-barred claims. Attorney Mary Alexander, who represented the plaintiffs, noted that the funds would be sourced from the Archdiocese and affiliated entities, supplemented by rights to pursue additional insurance claims.

Beyond financial compensation, the agreement mandates a 14-point reform plan. These measures require the Archdiocese to publish a list of credibly accused offenders, establish a survivor’s bill of rights, and implement an anonymous reporting system for future misconduct. The plan also bans the use of confidentiality clauses that previously obscured abuse allegations and requires the retention of an independent child-protection consultant. Judge Dennis Montali, who oversaw the bankruptcy proceedings, previously compelled the release of internal records that exposed how church officials handled past abuse reports.

Finalization of the deal rests on a vote by survivors and formal confirmation of the reorganization plan by the court.
