The study, titled "Unlocking the Dark Genome of Cancer via Integrated Multi-Omics Platform of Discovery," seeks to identify genomic features that influence cancer cell growth. Principal investigators Richard Allen White III of UNC Charlotte and Renaud Warin of BioCytics will integrate clinical samples with long-read sequencing and immune repertoire profiling. The team plans to deploy clinical-grade, Rust-based computational pipelines to automate variant calling and methylation analysis, transforming complex raw data into actionable insights for clinicians.

Dr. White emphasized the technical shift toward Rust, citing its memory safety and scalability as essential for modern bio-analytics. Meanwhile, Dr. Warin noted that the viral dark genome has historically been overlooked, despite its potential to trigger immune responses within dysregulated cancer cells. By identifying these viral-driven mechanisms, the team hopes to pinpoint new antigens, potentially expanding BioCytics' pipeline of immuno-oncology products. This local partnership between an R1 research institution and a clinical trial facility aims to move beyond theoretical research, focusing on creating a decision-support tool that provides a concrete score to gauge a patient's likely benefit from targeted treatments.
