Eric Migicovsky bets on consumer trust to defend Pebble’s brief warranty

“I think the most important thing is trust,” says Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky, defending his company’s decision to offer a 30-day warranty on its new e-paper smartwatches. In a market dominated by industry giants, he is gambling that his community’s faith in the brand outweighs standard consumer protections.

Since reviving the brand early last year, Migicovsky has maintained the signature aesthetic of the original devices while integrating updated internals. However, the short coverage period has sparked skepticism among potential buyers, particularly as the warranty duration barely outlasts the device’s battery life. This unease has been compounded by early hardware failures, most notably reports of front glass cracking on the Pebble Time 2.

Addressing these concerns, Migicovsky noted that the company has already replaced 330 units free of charge out of 19,000 devices currently in use. While the company intends to continue these replacements as long as possible, its official policy indicates a future transition toward offering discounted replacements once initial support measures are exhausted. For now, the founder insists that the brand’s relationship with its users remains the primary safeguard against hardware defects.
