Bethesda confirms Fallout 5 and Obsidian project amid Xbox layoffs

As Xbox navigates a massive restructuring involving 3,200 layoffs across its studios, Bethesda Game Studios is attempting to stabilize its public image by unveiling a long-term roadmap. The developer confirmed that Fallout 5 is officially in preproduction, signaling a new chapter for the franchise after a decade-long hiatus.

Todd Howard, director at Bethesda, framed the announcement as a commitment to long-term creative stability despite the recent workforce reductions affecting studios like id Software and Obsidian Entertainment. While Fallout 5 serves as the company’s long-range destination, the studio is currently prioritizing the expansion of existing worlds. Howard noted that the next mainline entry will share a common technology platform with The Elder Scrolls VI, a title that has remained in development since its 2018 reveal without an established release window.

Beyond the primary sequel, the franchise is seeing a significant revival. Obsidian, the team behind the fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, is actively developing a new title within the series. Furthermore, Bethesda has confirmed that remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas are currently in the works, though neither project has received a formal launch date. These moves represent an effort to keep the brand relevant following the success of the recent live-action television series and the ongoing support for Fallout 76.
