Leifras to Manage Weekend School Sports for All Itoshima Junior Highs

Itoshima City has tapped Tokyo-based Leifras Co., Ltd. to overhaul its weekend junior high school club activities, marking a significant step in Japan’s national transition toward community-led sports. The contract covers all six public junior high schools in the city, shifting operational burdens from teachers to private-sector management.

The agreement aligns with the Japanese government’s "Reform Execution Period" for fiscal year 2026, which mandates the transfer of weekend school club duties to local and private entities. With Japan’s nationwide market for such services estimated at 500 billion yen, the initiative seeks to alleviate teacher workloads while professionalizing extracurricular instruction. Leifras will deploy dedicated program directors to oversee safety, attendance, and parent communications across schools including Maebaru and Nijo Junior Highs.

To ensure quality, the company requires every instructor to complete a 12-hour training program focused on coaching skills and emergency protocols, ranging from heatstroke prevention to severe weather response. Leifras, which currently supports 2,120 clubs across Japan, plans to use this project as a model for sustainable regional club development. The firm emphasizes its track record of zero major accidents since entering the support business in 2013, citing this safety-first operational framework as a key factor in its municipal partnerships.
