The CD Renaissance Driven by Younger Buyers

Nearly 16.3 million CDs were sold in the United States during the first half of 2026, marking a 16 percent year-over-year surge. This unexpected growth suggests a shift in consumer habits, where physical discs are increasingly valued as tangible investments in artistic support rather than solely for audio playback.

Market research firm Luminate attributes this climb to collection building and the consistent demand for K-pop releases, including massive hits like BTS’ ARIRANG. Even excluding the high-performing K-pop sector, domestic CD sales still climbed 6.7 percent. Perhaps most striking is the demographic shift: roughly half of Gen Z and millennial purchasers report they do not even own a functional CD player, signaling that the format has been recontextualized into an affordable, aesthetic collectible.

Broader physical media trends mirror this uptick, with total sales of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes rising 7.8 percent overall. While vinyl remains the market leader with 21.8 million units sold, cassettes also saw movement with 205,000 units. According to Luminate’s Denise Schenasi, the sustained preference for vinyl continues a multi-year trend of the format outselling CDs, yet the compact disc’s recent resurgence proves that younger listeners prioritize the act of physical ownership as a direct financial contribution to their favorite artists.
