Corales Puntacana Championship Expands to Record 144-Player Field

A record field of 144 professional golfers from 20 countries descends upon the Dominican Republic this week for the ninth Corales Puntacana Championship. The tournament, now shifted to a mid-July slot on the PGA TOUR schedule, offers a US$4 million purse, the largest prize fund in the nation’s sporting history.

The event represents a significant evolution for the Dominican Republic’s sports tourism sector, fueled by a strategic integration between the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, and FedExCup. Held at the Corales Golf Course, the competition brings together elite international talent, including defending champion Garrick Higgo and past winners such as Brice Garnett, Joel Dahmen, and Chad Ramey. Notable PGA Tour players including Brandt Snedeker, Nick Dunlap, and Stephan Jaeger are also slated to compete.

Beyond the professional leaderboard, the tournament serves as a developmental stage for local talent, with Doménico Geminiani, Anthony García, and Willy Pumarol qualifying through the Tour Canita circuit. Organizers have expanded the visitor experience to include oceanfront skyboxes and live music performances. Proceeds from the July 16-19 event will support the Grupo Puntacana Foundation, funding local environmental conservation, healthcare, and education initiatives.
