Massachusetts Small Businesses Push Back on Pending Privacy Legislation

Massachusetts small business owners are warning state legislators that proposed privacy bills currently under review could inadvertently stifle market competition and inflate costs for consumers. The Internet for Growth coalition argues that overly restrictive mandates threaten the digital advertising tools essential for local firms to reach their target audiences.

As a conference committee works to reconcile House and Senate versions of consumer privacy legislation, local entrepreneurs are sounding the alarm. Carlos Vargas, owner of a long-standing Greater Boston insurance agency, argues that lawmakers must balance data protection with the economic necessity of digital discovery. He contends that privacy safeguards should not come at the expense of the tools that allow small businesses to compete with larger, established corporations.

Retailers are particularly concerned about the impact on the customer experience. Mark Doherty, owner of the Reading-based Dynamik Sports, notes that shoppers have grown to rely on personalized recommendations and low-cost digital services supported by advertising. He warns that rigid regulatory frameworks could render these services less effective or force businesses to pass increased costs onto the public. Research from Internet for Growth supports this sentiment, noting that 94% of voters view digital tools as critical to small-business survival, while 91% find personalized advertising helpful for discovering local providers.
