The transition allows eligible staff to share in the financial value generated by their projects, cementing a structure that leadership calls a natural extension of the company's 'Build with Purpose' philosophy. Despite the change in ownership, the Chicago-based contractor confirmed that its operational model, leadership team, and day-to-day project responsibilities remain unchanged.
Chicago-Based Richard Transitions to Employee Ownership
Construction firm Richard has officially shifted to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, placing the company’s future directly in the hands of its workforce. Founder and CEO Jed Richard announced the transition this week, framing the move as a long-term strategy to sustain the firm's independent culture and growth trajectory.

Jed Richard emphasized that the decision is intended to empower the people currently driving the firm’s development, rather than signaling an exit for himself. The firm, which maintains additional offices in San Diego and Denver, has set an ambitious target to become the most admired construction company in the United States by 2040. By moving to an ESOP, the organization aims to bolster its platform for expansion into new markets while deepening its commitment to safety and client service standards.
