Satechi Debuts Keyboards With User-Replaceable Batteries

Most thin wireless peripherals eventually become e-waste when their internal cells fail, but Satechi is bucking that trend with its new Slim EX line. By housing lithium batteries behind a simple screw-fastened hatch, the company offers a rare solution that prioritizes long-term hardware sustainability over glued-shut convenience.

The new lineup includes the compact Slim EX1 and the full-size Slim EX3, both of which feature an underside compartment accessible via a standard Phillips head screw. This design choice addresses the inevitable degradation of lithium-ion cells, allowing users to swap out power packs rather than discarding the entire device once the charge capacity wanes. Satechi notes that these batteries remain under warranty, with support available for those needing replacements.

Beyond the battery architecture, the hardware supports multi-device pairing for up to four connections across macOS, Windows, Android, and iPadOS, with automatic key remapping. The keyboards utilize quiet scissor-switch mechanisms and charge via USB-C, boasting a battery life of up to five weeks on a single charge. The Slim EX1 is priced at $49.99, while the numeric-keypad-equipped Slim EX3 retails for $69.99. A companion Slim EX Wireless Mouse, also featuring a replaceable battery, launches alongside the keyboards for $29.99.
