Netflix eyes linear streaming channels to combat subscriber fatigue

Faced with declining engagement and a struggle to retain viewers beyond initial seasons, Netflix is exploring the introduction of always-on linear channels. The shift aims to mimic the passive viewing experience of services like Pluto TV, signaling a departure from the platform’s traditional on-demand-only model.

The streaming giant is also weighing the potential for service bundles, a strategy already employed by competitors such as Apple TV and Prime Video. These internal discussions, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, arrive as the company seeks to stabilize its audience metrics following reports of significant viewership drops during second seasons of its original series.

Netflix has recently experimented with background-friendly content, including video podcasts and clips from digital brands like BuzzFeed and Condé Nast, to capture users who prefer less demanding viewing experiences. While the ad-supported tier remains a core pillar of the company’s growth strategy, the shift toward linear programming suggests a need to keep subscribers within the app for longer durations. Netflix spokesperson Adrian Zamora declined to comment on the potential changes.
