Scandit Debuts AI-Driven Age Verification for Self-Checkout

Retailers lose significant time to manual age checks, but a new solution from Zurich-based Scandit promises to eliminate these delays. By utilizing on-device vision AI, the technology automates the verification of age-restricted purchases like alcohol and tobacco, aiming to streamline checkout lines without requiring additional kiosk hardware or store associate intervention.

The system processes 80% of age checks automatically in under 10 seconds. When a restricted item is scanned, the kiosk displays a QR code that shoppers scan with their smartphones. A browser-based interface then prompts for a quick selfie, which the AI uses to estimate age. If the system requires further proof, customers can scan an ID, which the software compares against the selfie to detect fraud, such as the use of another person’s identification.

Christian Floerkemeier, CTO and co-founder of Scandit, noted that retailers currently struggle to balance labor costs with the need for efficient checkout flows. This new tool allows staff to pivot toward higher-value tasks while maintaining compliance. The company emphasizes that the system prioritizes privacy by performing all biometric processing on the user's device, ensuring that no sensitive data is stored or transmitted. The solution complies with major regulatory standards, including GDPR and CCPA, and targets high-volume retail environments like supermarkets and convenience stores.
