Sound Physicians CEO to Address Anesthesia Revenue Challenges in Asheville

As traditional hospital anesthesia models face mounting financial pressure, Sound Physicians CEO David Leachman will take the stage at the North Carolina Healthcare Association Summer Meeting on July 16. His presentation aims to reframe anesthesia as a core driver of institutional growth rather than a persistent clinical constraint.

Dr. Leachman, who holds both medical and business degrees, argues that current delivery systems are increasingly unsustainable for modern hospitals. During his session, "Anesthesia, Access, and Cost: Fixing a Critical System Problem in Healthcare," he will outline strategies to move away from heavy reliance on temporary locum tenens staff. By implementing flexible staffing models and data-driven governance, he contends that facilities can stabilize services and improve patient throughput without requiring significant new capital investment.

Currently leading a network of over 1,200 physicians across 50 hospitals, Leachman oversees clinical strategy for Sound Physicians. He maintains that hospitals often overlook the systemic role of anesthesia, treating it as a siloed department rather than essential infrastructure within the perioperative environment. The NCHA Summer Meeting, held July 15-17 in Asheville, serves as the backdrop for this discussion on shifting anesthesia from a cost-heavy burden toward a more transparent, revenue-generating component of the acute-care system.
