Sony’s Digital Pivot Signals the End of Physical Game Ownership

Sony will cease production of physical PlayStation discs in January 2028, mandating a transition to exclusively digital purchases for PS5 titles. This shift coincides with the planned closure of digital storefronts for the PS3 and PS Vita, highlighting the precarious nature of software preservation in a purely cloud-dependent ecosystem.

The move reflects a broader industry trend toward digital distribution. According to Sony’s May financial results, approximately 80 percent of PS5 game sales are already digital. Major publishers are accelerating this departure from physical media; Rockstar Games recently confirmed that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will ship as a code in a box rather than a traditional disc.

While digital libraries offer convenience—such as pre-loading and consolidated storage—the transition strips players of the ability to resell games or share physical copies with friends. For publishers, the shift eliminates the overhead costs of manufacturing and logistics. However, the decision to shutter legacy stores for the PS3 and PS Vita demonstrates that access to digital content remains at the mercy of corporate lifecycles. Once these storefronts vanish, the games tied to them effectively disappear from official circulation, creating a significant void in the historical preservation of the medium.
