Assistive Communication Tech Delivers 3.3x Economic Return

High-tech augmentative and alternative communication tools yield a 3.3x return on investment while boosting quality of life by 65% for users with conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, and ALS, according to a recent study conducted by research firm Augur and Boston College for the Dynavox Group.

Assistive Communication Tech Delivers 3.3x Economic Return

The research highlights that providing individuals with the means to communicate is not merely a social necessity but a sound economic strategy. By enabling users to express their desires and health needs more effectively, these technologies reduce the burden on caregivers and improve overall participation in society. Data indicates that 72% of users report an improved ability to express personal preferences, while 53% gain better control over communicating their health requirements.

For those diagnosed with ALS, the impact is particularly acute. Digital communication tools minimize the guesswork for families and clinicians, allowing patients to call for help and articulate needs with greater precision. Tara Rudnicki, President of North America at Tobii Dynavox, noted that these findings validate the tangible shift in possibilities for individuals who previously lacked a voice. Elizabeth W. Stewart of The University of Alabama added that such access serves as a gateway to education, employment, and self-advocacy, reinforcing the necessity of broader investment in these systems.
