Oman and France Forge Major Renewable Energy and Tech Partnership

During an official state visit to Paris, Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said and President Emmanuel Macron oversaw the signing of three strategic agreements, cementing a long-term collaboration between Oman and French energy giant EDF to overhaul the Sultanate's power infrastructure and digital capabilities.

The centerpiece of the agreement is the 2,000 MW Jabal Abyad Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project, set to become the largest facility of its kind in the Middle East. Developed by a consortium including EDF power solutions, ONEIC, TAKHZEEN, and GUE, the plant will utilize the topography near the Wadi Dayqah Dam to provide critical grid stability and long-term storage, enabling a higher integration of renewable energy sources across the country.

In addition to the hydro project, the partners finalized a Power Purchase Agreement for the 500 MW Al Kamil Solar PV Independent Power Project. This installation, backed by OQ Alternative Energy and Nama Power and Water Procurement, marks EDF's third major renewable venture in the Sultanate, following previous commitments to wind and solar developments. The initiative is designed to meet Oman’s surging demand for low-carbon electricity while fostering local job creation.

Beyond traditional power generation, the Sultanate has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EDF and Synergy Investments to develop a 1,000 MW sustainable digital infrastructure platform. This project aims to establish Oman as a regional hub for artificial intelligence, cloud services, and advanced computing, directly supporting the economic diversification goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
